Nature's Gym: Where to Find Outdoor Fitness Classes and Boot Camps in Tacoma

Outdoor fitness helps reduce stress and anxiety by improving your mood. People who exercise outdoors are more likely to stick to a routine as they are less bored. Continuous exercises help with muscle toning, improve cardiovascular health, and enhance flexibility.

Tacoma, Washington, has many outdoor spaces where people can exercise. There are parks, hiking trails, beaches, and golf courses.

Health Benefits of Outdoor Fitness Classes

Exercising in warm weather helps regulate your body temperature, ensuring the heart pumps more blood to your muscles. Exercising with others helps improve your social well-being by allowing you to meet new people.

Running against the wind is a great way to burn calories. Your joints suffer from running in one spot, such as on treadmills. You also benefit from vitamin D. Outdoor exercises have many multi-joint movements, improving your coordination and enhancing flexibility and muscle tone.

Unlike indoor exercise, outdoor workouts are mood-lifting. Nature can motivate you to stay active, thereby reducing stress. Exercising near scenic views such as a river, lake, or ocean gives you a mental boost. There is also more space, and you don't get bored fast.

Popular Outdoor Fitness Classes and Bootcamps in Tacoma

There are various spots for holding outdoor fitness classes in Tacoma. Interestingly, most are free.

Point Defiance Boot Camp

The Mountaineer group runs boot camps several times during the year at Point Defiance Park. These camps have activities for children under 12 and older. The kids separate into different groups depending on age.

They assemble in the morning at Point Defiance Park. The kids spend the morning section exploring the park before having a picnic lunch. The afternoon session is at Owen Beach, where they play games.

The older kids have a four-day boot camp that includes rock climbing, learning first aid, rope skills, and more. On Fridays, they join the younger kids for the afternoon session of games and award ceremonies.

Ruston Way Waterfront Yoga Classes

There is a free community yoga session every Tuesday between noon and 1 PM. You only need to bring your mat to the upstairs room of the Waterfront Market. Grit City Wellness and the Waterfront Market in Ruston sponsor the session. The Yoga classes are for all levels.

The Waterfront Market is at the Ruston waterfront on Club Yacht Road. It is open daily from 10:00 AM to 6 PM and has several vendors, eateries, and restaurants.

Zumba in the Park at Wright Park

Every Wednesday night (6:30 PM – 7:30 PM), Roxanne Carrano hosts a free Zumba fitness class at J.Hood Wright Park. Zumba is an international dance that incorporates various dance moves. These dances include

  • Samba
  • Latin
  • Hip-hop
  • Rhythm and Blues and other dance themes.

The combination of the various dance themes ensures that every body part moves. You get a workout session that doesn't feel like a workout. There are a variety of routines as they change constantly.

Roxanne creates easy-to-follow dance steps and follows a slow, medium, and fast rhythm. Though Zumba does not require partners, feel free to invite your friends. The park has a kid's playground and a picnic area.

Outdoor CrossFit at Chambers Bay

Just outside Tacoma is the Chambers Bay. There is a golf course with no carts, and you must walk all six miles. The golf course has dunes and grass in the trails. You can choose to play golf or take a nature walk.

The golf course's quarry dates back to 1832. Designed by Robert Trent Jones II, the course has links similar to those of Ireland and Scotland. Sometimes, strong winds blow across the golf course. You'll also see some massive concrete structures, the remains of a mining operation at Chambers Bay.

You can also do CrossFit exercises along the three separate Chambers Bay Loop hiking trails. The trails offer much climbing and epic water views. You can run, do pushups, air squats, pull-ups, squat jumps, burpees, splint, crawl, or situps.

High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) at Swan Creek Park

Metro Parks Tacoma owns the largest park acreage, while Pierce County owns a small area. The park has an upland forest, natural trails, a stream with salmon, and a wooded canyon.

At Swan Creek Park, you can perform high-intensity interval training. These intense cardiorespiratory exercises require time frames that alternate between intense workouts and rest periods.

Health and Safety Tips for Outdoor Fitness Classes

While fun, outdoor exercises expose you to unique factors. You need to take care of them in the following ways.

  • Avoid workouts during the warmer parts of the day, generally between 12-2 PM.
  • Drink plenty of fluids and wear proper clothing.
  • Remember to apply a lot of sunscreen.
  • Start slowly to prepare your body for exercise, and remember to cool down properly for proper recovery.
