Kayaking helps strengthen your core and upper body, toning your body and muscles. Burning calories due to repeated body movement leads to easier blood pumping, improving cardiovascular health. The release of happy hormones leads to reduced stress imprints on your mental health.
Tacoma in Washington is a vibrant kayaking destination. Whether a novice or an experienced paddler, you will find a perfect spot among Tacoma's various kayaking locations. Tacoma is in the middle of different water bodies, providing the ideal waterfront to launch your kayak.
Strengthens Your Core And Upper Body: Kayaking involves using paddles to move through the water, meaning you must move your upper body. Your arms propel through the water while simultaneously moving your shoulders, back, and chest. That action enables you to strengthen your core and upper body. The more you use your muscles, the more your body tones and strengthens.
Improves Your Cardiovascular Health: Body movement also means burning calories, especially if you paddle against the current or big waves. As you burn calories, blood pumping becomes easier, improving your cardiovascular health. Your legs push your body and, at the same time, balance the kayak, therefore toning the leg muscles.
Enhanced Relaxation: Most people have a lot going on from their jobs, family, and environment, which can get overwhelming. There is a need to release the pressure, and kayaking can significantly help. It's a form of exercise that lets you simultaneously release your happy hormones and stress.
The accessibility of beautiful beaches and lakeside parks makes it one of the best places to go kayaking. It has several beautiful spots.
The bay is past south of Brown's Point and the Port of Tacoma. You can launch your kayak from the Dick Gilmur Shoreline, which is along Marine View Drive. Mount Ranier, Olympic Mountain, and Cascade Foothills are some of the scenic views you'll see from the bay.
Commencement Bay is busy, and you must watch out for other vessels. An interesting route is from Commencement Bay, following the shoreline through the small waterside, in front of the pier, and ending at Port Defiance Park.
The water at Commencement Bay is gentler, though don't stray too far from the shoreline, as conditions can change pretty fast.
It is the largest natural lake in Tacoma. Two public parks are at the Lake: Harry Todd, North Park, and Marina. You can launch your kayak from a paved ramp with two launching docks. There are also a lot of parking spaces near the launch area.
The Russell Landing Marina and Launching Dock has a picnic area and offers jet ski, kayak, and motorboat rentals. Several islands near the lake include Silcox, Short, Cors, and Barlows.
The 1.5-mile-long inlet begins at Commencement Bay and ends at the Port of Tacoma. It is a great place to see the Museum of Glass, Union Station, and the Tacoma Dome. Foss Waterway has calm waters and is ideal for beginners.
You will also have access to various waterfront restaurants and shopping options, as the waterway is in downtown Tacoma.
The Park is 3.4 acres at the waterfront in downtown Tacoma, next to the Foss Waterway. To launch your kayak, head to the west end of the Waterway Park ( under the 509 bridge) in the East. You can see Puget Sound and Tacoma's industrial area from the park.
The beach is south of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. You will have clear views of the Olympic Peninsula, Fox Island, and Gig Harbor. Go to 6th Avenue, past Titlow Park. Opposite the Steamers Seafood cafe, you will find a parking space for your car.
Carry your kayaking gear across the tracks and down a flight of stairs. Be careful, as the stairs can be slippery at low tide. The currents at the Tacoma narrows are stronger than those at the other kayaking places.
While kayaking is a fun sport, you should also avoid accidents.
